General John Allen Opts to Retire

reuters.com | U.S. Marine General John Allen, who led NATO forces in Afghanistan and was caught up but later cleared in the scandal that forced CIA chief David Petraeus to resign, said Tuesday he will retire and forgo his nomination to become NATO's supreme allied commander because of his wife's health.

The decision ends the career of one of the U.S. military's most well-known leaders, who until February 10 spent 19 months in Afghanistan trying to help wind down America's longest war and strengthen Afghanistan's military to fight insurgency.

Ron Paul: The State Of The Union Was Very Depressing

Xrepublic.tv | Former presidential candidate Ron Paul reacted to President Obama's State of the Union address with John Stossel on Fox Business Network.

Paul said in the speech, "certainly we didn't get any answers tonight" to the key issues facing the nation.

"Everything on the surface looks like it's welfare-ism and warfare-ism forever. But I think underneath there's a smoldering desire that is growing by leaps and bounds that's saying that a lot of the people in this country have had enough of it. Tonight he talked a lot about gun control, I don't think the American people are going to put up with that," said Paul.

Rand Paul on Iran Sanctions

antiwar.com | In the news section, I (John Glaser) critique some of Senator Rand Paul’s foreign policy speech at the Heritage Foundation yesterday. One aspect of the article that I could not elaborate on is Sen. Paul’s support for sanctions against Iran.

Following his speech yesterday, I was afforded the opportunity to ask Paul a question about about this. The sanctions, I said, are not only strategically ineffective, but they are a cruel form of collective punishment that harm innocent Iranian civilians, without much purpose beyond political points at home. Instead of serving as an alternative to war, as Paul said in his speech, sanctions have historically been a prelude to it.

The Voter Fraud That ‘Never Happens’ Keeps Coming Back

Nationalreview.com | Critics of voter ID and other laws cracking down on voter fraud claim they’re unnecessary because fraud is nonexistent. For instance, Brennan Center attorneys Michael Waldman and Justin Levitt claimed last year: “A person casting two votes risks jail time and a fine for minimal gain. Proven voter fraud, statistically, happens about as often as death by lightning strike.”

Well, lightning is suddenly all over Cincinnati, Ohio. The Hamilton County Board of Elections is investigating 19 possible cases of alleged voter fraud that occurred when Ohio was a focal point of the 2012 presidential election. A total of 19 voters and nine witnesses are part of the probe.
